Formation

The decision to enter a life of consecration to God in a religious congregation is a most serious one and requires a great deal of prayer, dialogue and reflection.  Once that decision has been reached, a period of formation begins that continues throughout one’s life; a continuing choosing to live in union with God through a vowed life in community.

Pre-Postulancy -   This period of formation lasts from 6 months to 2 years and can be lived at home with frequent visits to the community or it can be lived within the community.  It is a time to get to know the sisters and to discern if this way of life is right for the individual.

Postulancy - This next period of formation lasts from 6 months to 2 years and it is a time spent living with the Sisters in a community of the congregation.  It is a time to become acquainted with their way of life in a more intense manner.

Novitiate – This is a sacred time of 2 years.  The first year is the canonical year and it is spent in intense prayer, study of the vows and Franciscan values and community living.  The second year includes more study, prayer and community living with an added component of ministerial experience.

Temporary Profession – After novitiate, the sister makes a commitment of one year to live the vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience.  This temporary commitment may be renewed for a period of no less than 3 years and no longer than 6 years.

Final Profession - At the end of the temporary commitment, the sister may request to make final vows.  At this time, she commits her life to God forever.

One Response

  1. I am ready to commit my life to God. On April 28th was one year anniversary that I consencrated my life to Jesus. This year has been filled with many blessings and graces and everyday I hear Jesus’ voice calling me and putting me in situations to demonstate my faith and my trust in Jesus Christ. I have responded to the retreat that is in August. I look forward to discuss this further, until then I will be praying and asking God to continue guide me according to his will..

    God Bless you
    Prayerfully AnnMarie
